There’s something truly special about seeing Europe from the water, and recently I had the chance to experience it first-hand with Avalon Waterways. I travelled as part of an educational trip for travel agents, representing The Travel Boutique, and I was excited to finally discover what river cruising is really like.

Spoiler: it’s even better than I imagined.

Over three days, I sailed through Germany and into the Netherlands, wandering Christmas Markets, learning from local guides, and waking up each morning to new scenery right outside my window. From the warm welcome onboard to the relaxed pace of sailing, it didn’t take long to understand why so many people fall in love with Avalon.

Here’s a look at my experience — and why I think a river cruise might be the perfect way for you to explore Europe too.

Our Itinerary

Day 1 — Frankfurt to Koblenz

We flew from Dublin to Frankfurt, where an Avalon Waterways driver met us and brought us directly to the ship — only about a 30-minute transfer. From the moment we stepped onboard, the crew welcomed us with warm smiles and quickly showed us to our cabin.

As we sailed towards the charming town of Koblenz, Avalon hosted a complimentary wine and cheese tasting in the lounge, led by a wonderful expert from the US. It was such a relaxed and fun way to meet other guests.

Once docked, we had a couple of hours of free time to explore the famous Christmas Markets. Twinkling lights, wooden stalls, mulled wine — it was the perfect way to settle into the festive atmosphere of the trip.

Day 2 — Cologne

We sailed through the night and woke to a beautiful sunrise in Cologne, right beside the bridge. After breakfast, we joined an early walking tour with our local guide, Sacha, who shared the city’s history — including the impact of the Second World War.

We visited the magnificent Cologne Cathedral and wandered through the old town, where we came across the quirky “big nose” statue of Tünnes and Schäl. Tradition says that rubbing Tünnes’ nose brings good luck, so of course we had to try it!

Back onboard, we began our longest sailing of the trip — a peaceful 17-hour cruise towards Amsterdam, gliding through the Rhine overnight.

Day 3 — Amsterdam

After a delicious gala dinner the night before, we arrived in Amsterdam. Our morning began with a canal cruise led by a local Dutch guide who shared stories about the city’s history and distinctive architecture. Guests could then choose to join an optional walking tour for further exploring.

We stayed docked in Amsterdam overnight, giving everyone time to enjoy the city at their own pace — whether that meant wandering the canals, soaking up the culture, or simply relaxing onboard.

My short time with Avalon showed me just how enjoyable and effortless river cruising can be. The small-ship atmosphere, thoughtful service, and ever-changing views make the journey feel just as special as the destinations themselves.
